Filming in the Outdoors

Central Otago is renowned for outdoor pursuits from adventure sports to gardening.

Such a lifestyle is possible because of the climate, rivers and lakes and mountains, and the stunning scenery that our continental climate gives us. However, it is for exactly these reasons that care and planning is needed for any extended filming in the outdoors.

New Zealand’s weather pattern is dominated by alternating high’s (anti-cyclones) and low’s (cyclones) that move onto the country in a general westerly fashion. Central Otago is occasionally touched by winds from the ‘roaring forties’ that can seem to whip up from the South Pole. So while Central Otago is renowned for its hot dry summers, at other times it can turn cold and wet with almost no warning.

Even in summer, the hills can often receive a good dusting of snow. In winter this snow becomes a permanent fixture down to 1500m.

Anyone planning to spend any time in the outdoors for filming should be prepared for all four seasons of weather over a short period.
