THE LADYSMITH

Cycle Central Otago
A loop trail along the mighty Clutha River in Roxburgh.

FEATURES

This Central Otago cycle trail loops around what was the Ladysmith gold claim on the opposite side of the Clutha River to Roxburgh. Ideally suited for the whole family, this easy 1 hour ride winds in and out of the sluicings, through the pine trees and alongside the mighty Clutha Mata-Au River.

The start of the trail is 500m along Ladysmith Road, accessed from the Roxburgh Bridge - turn left over the bridge and drive 2.6km to Ladysmith Road. There are interpretation panels at various points including a good direction map at the start of the trail. The main trail, bisected by a number of Central otago bike trails, is marked with orange track markers - follow the trail anti-clockwise for the best views, don’t forget your camera. A popular walking and cycling area so do look out for fellow cyclists and walkers.

This is a great forest cycle trail at any time of the year, especially in the heat of summer, it’s a pleasant place to enjoy a shady ride. Hand stacked tailings, sluicing ponds, dredge tailings and dwelling remains are to be seen and in the river are the remains of the Jubilee dredge. The river is followed for some distance so care should be taken with children. There is a wonderful swimming spot at Bunny Cove for the family to cool off in summer.

The area is private land but by an agreement with the owners, free access is available for walkers and cyclists. As it is a forest area, smoking is prohibited, as well as hunting, shooting, or fires. Dogs are allowed on a leash.

Complement the day with a refreshment stop at Jimmy’s Pies in Roxburgh for a ‘world famous for over 40 years in New Zealand’ pie or try one of the delectable slices! The best value icecream cone can be found at the local dairy or try a real fruit ice cream at one of the orchard stalls and while you are there, purchase your fresh fruit in season.
