Whilst Central Otago has one of New Zealand’s smaller permanent population bases, the majority of services and facilities that would normally be found in a larger town or city are available in the region.
Additional to schools, banks, medical, postal, fuel and retail services, there are many members of our community who contribute to and are involved in providing services such as St Johns, rural and volunteer fire brigades.
There are a choice of churches in the district - Anglican, Presbyterian, Catholic, Elim Pentecostal, Apostolic, Methodist, Salvation Army and Jehovah’s Witness.
Government departments are widely represented by Work and Income, Department of Conservation, Accident Compensation Corporation, Child Youth and Family, Corrections Department, Ministry of Justice and Police (in Alexandra, Cromwell Omakau, Ranfurly and Roxburgh).
Service groups include Lions, Returned Services Association and Rotary.
Support agencies include Alexandra Council of Social Services, Budgeting and Victim Support.
There is a Chamber of Commerce, local promotions groups, sports groups, clubs and societies - including rugby, bowls, golf , and tennis clubs and theatrical societies, book clubs and arts and crafts groups found throughout the district. A list of sports groups can be found on the Sport Otago site .
For further information on groups in the area go to the clubs and associations directory. |
