The Lake Dunstan Boat Club powerboat section runs an annual Powerboat Regatta for circuit racing boats, primarily in November each year. The site for the racing is in the Karawau Arm of Lake Dunstan, just above Old Cromwell Town Jetty. This site is very sheltered from the prevailing winds of the area, therefore almost guaranteeing non-cancellation of the event. This site also has excellent launching facilities for all crafts.
Circuit boat racing comprises of a range of classes of boats, including GP Hydroplanes, Tunnel Boats, Racing Runabouts, V Bottoms, just to name a few. These boats range in size and speed from 3 metres long – with a top speed of approx 60 kph - through to the GP Hydroplanes approx 7 metres long and capable of speeds of 250 kph. Competitors from all over NZ support this event, with South Island Titles being contested.
We race many types of craft on Oval and Triangular left hand turn courses, which range in overall length of between 1 and 2 kilometres.
Many natural grandstand viewing points are accessible for the public to watch and with all different types of boats racing in close proximity of the shores, this makes for a spectacular event.
