TelecommunicationsThe population of Central Otago is almost representative of the national average in terms of access to telecommunications systems.
The table below is by household.
The exception is the high number of resident households with fax machines. This probably reflects the large number of small, home based businesses, including farms, in Central Otago and the indifferent internet access in large parts of the District.
Because the good access to the internet shown in the table above doesn’t necessarily imply that there is excellent service in Central Otago. The quality and coverage of broadband is still poor compared to other, more urban, areas of New Zealand. Improvements are however on the horizon in the form of the Government's ultra-fast broadband and Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) project. Most of Central Otago is scheduled to receive ultra-fast broadband via the RBI which is being implemented in the District by Vodafone and is expected to be fully rolled out in 2016. Central Otago is a partner with the other local authorities in Otago in the Digital Otago project which is working to ensure the best possible ultra-fast broadband coverage for the Province. A 2013 - 2016 Otago Digital Strategy has been developed to define a vision to help Otago residents benefit from digital services. CLICK HERE to access the Digital Strategy.
