|Established in 2017, Stone House Gardens is an ambitious project to develop a three acre garden surrounding what is thought to be the first fruit packhouse built in Central Otago, a stone building dating back to around the 1860s. The garden is open to all Stone House café guests.
There are currently three gardens to view. The entrance garden has been designed to reflect the colours of the stone building. The colours we see in Central Otago’s most prominent wine have been interpreted in the plantings in Pinot Noir garden. The fountain garden has been planted in leafy greens and soft creamy pastels that complement the fountains and provide cool respite on a scorching Central Otago day. From the fountain garden, the not yet open marquee garden can be seen with plantings in romantic soft pinks and blues with lime green accents. In the distance a tree avenue takes your eye to the Luytens bench and you can imagine the remainder of the garden unfolding over the next years. The plants and garden style have been carefully designed to typify a Central Otago country garden.
The Stone House Gardens Café is open daily for brunch, lunch and afternoon wine or tea with seating in both the restored historic stone building and the garden. The café fare is simple, local and fresh with a rustic elegance, complemented by a range of local wines, craft beer and cider. Fruit, jams, honeys and other gifts are available at the café counter.
