Directors cut of Hillary’s ‘Ocean to Sky’ movie which follows Sir Edmund Hillary’s journey up the Ganges River in a jet boat followed by a mountain climb where Sir Ed took ill.
This story and film are not new to audiences in New Zealand, and nor are the players. However the Bannockburn Arts Charitable Trust are in a position to offer you a new take on this old film, a Director’s Cut that includes footage never seen before. Scenes that give a new dimension to the courage and skills of the drivers in a turbulent river that seems determined to allow no one through.
The grandeur of the great river Ganges, the enthusiasm of the Indian people, the beauty of the sailing Dows that are no more, replaced by motors that have nothing of their serenity, this film takes us back to a simpler time and shows us a journey of great contrasts and vitality.
Having also received access to the late Murray Jones slides, a Bannockburn resident and one of NZ’s great alpinists, who accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary on this epic adventure, there will be a short slide show honouring Murray preceding the film.
